Adult acne - causes, daily care and proven Christina cosmetics

Adult acne affects 25–40% of women over 25 years old
Acne doesn't end with high school. According to clinical studies in Poland and Western Europe, adult acne affects 25–40% of women aged 25–45 and increasingly also men over 30. However, adult acne behaves differently than teenage acne—it requires gentler but precise care.
In this compendium, we show what truly causes adult acne, how to effectively care for it at home, and which active ingredients to use to avoid aggravating the problem. All recommendations are based on the many years of experience of Christina Cosmeceuticals—an Israeli cosmetic laboratory present in 60 countries since 1982.
Why do adults also get acne?
Hormones — the most common cause
Hormonal fluctuations are the number one cause of acne after age 25. An increase in androgen levels in the second half of the cycle, perimenopause after 40, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), discontinuing hormonal contraception, pregnancy, and breastfeeding—all these conditions lead to increased sebaceous gland activity.
Increased sebum production combined with excessive keratinization of the skin creates ideal conditions for Cutibacterium acnes bacteria. The result: blackheads, papules, pustules, and painful cysts most often in the U-zone—around the mouth, chin, and jawline.
Stress and cortisol
Chronic stress elevates cortisol levels, which further increases sebum secretion and simultaneously weakens the skin's natural immune response. This is why flare-ups often appear before important presentations, during periods of work overload, or after a sleepless night.
Hydrolipidic barrier — counterintuitively, weakened
Adult skin with acne is often simultaneously dehydrated and oily. Does that sound paradoxical? It's not. Aggressive cleansing, alcohol-based toners, or peeling 3 times a week weaken the hydrolipidic barrier, and in response, the skin produces even more sebum, trying to compensate for the deficiencies.
Comedogenic cosmetics and incorrect skin care
Many "skin care" cosmetics contain comedogenic ingredients—oils, mineral waxes, some silicones. For adult acne-prone skin, even minor details matter.
6 principles of adult acne care
1. Gentle cleansing
Strong, alkaline soaps disrupt the hydrolipidic mantle. The optimal pH for acne-prone skin is 4.5–5.5.
2. Salicylic acid — the hero of active ingredients
Salicylic acid (BHA) is a lipophilic keratolytic. Use 2–3 times a week in the evening.
3. Niacinamide — a multi-tool
Vitamin B3 regulates sebum production, reduces redness, and minimizes pore visibility.
4. Hydration instead of degreasing
Acne-prone skin needs light, moisturizing gel-cream type moisturizers.
5. SPF daily
UV exacerbates post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). Mineral or hybrid SPF 30–50 filters.
6. Professional consultation
No improvement after 6–8 weeks of proper skin care? It's time for a consultation with a cosmetologist or dermatologist.
