Retinol Retinol (Vitamin A)
Retinol is the pure form of vitamin A, one of the best-studied and most effective anti-age ingredients in dermatology — the gold standard of modern cosmetology. In the skin it converts to retinoic acid, which binds to nuclear receptors (RAR/RXR), activating genes responsible for the synthesis of collagen and elastin and for accelerating cell turnover. It effectively reduces wrinkles, evens out skin tone, inhibits melanin production in hyperpigmentation and regulates sebaceous gland function in acne-prone skin. First effects are visible after 4 weeks, full effects after 12 weeks of regular use. It requires careful introduction (start with low concentrations, 2-3x per week) and absolutely an SPF cream in the morning — retinol makes the skin more sensitive to UV radiation. Best results in mature skin with wrinkles, photoaging and hyperpigmentation.
Anti-Age Gold Standard0.4% retinol over 24 weeks: 27% reduction in wrinkles, 27% increase in epidermal thickness, 80% increase in collagen (Kang et al., 2005, n=23).
Retinol → retinaldehyde → retinoic acid → binds RAR/RXR (nuclear receptors). Activates COL1A1 genes, MMP-1 inhibitor, CYP26 (homeostasis control). Stimulates epidermal renewal — keratinocyte in 14 instead of 28 days.
