Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate (HPR) is a latest-generation retinoid — an ester derivative of retinoic acid that acts directly on the skin's retinoid receptors without the need for metabolic conversion. Unlike classic retinol, which must be converted into retinoic acid (a multi-step process that is taxing for the skin), HPR works immediately, so it does not cause flaking, irritation or sun sensitivity. It stimulates collagen production, accelerates cell renewal, and reduces wrinkles, discolouration and signs of photoaging. It achieves efficacy comparable to retinol with far better tolerance — making it ideal for sensitive, dry skin and for those just starting out with retinoids. It is a breakthrough ingredient in modern anti-age skincare — the effects of younger-looking skin without the cost of "retinisation".

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is a water-soluble antioxidant essential to humans, regarded in cosmetics as the gold standard of brightening and anti-aging protection. It performs multiple functions: it strongly neutralizes free radicals, is an essential cofactor in collagen synthesis, inhibits melanin production in melanocytes and strengthens the action of UV filters. It has been clinically proven that, used regularly, it reduces wrinkles, evens out skin tone, brightens hyperpigmentation and restores a youthful glow to the complexion. The most effective forms are L-ascorbic acid (the strongest but unstable) and stable derivatives: Ascorbyl Glucoside, tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate (THD) and magnesium ascorbyl phosphate. Ideal in the care of all skin types, especially dull, tired skin with photoaging and hyperpigmentation — best applied in the morning before an SPF cream.

Ferulic acid is an organic phenolic acid that occurs naturally in plant cell walls (mainly in grains, rice, oats and apples), where it serves as their natural shield against UV radiation. In cosmetics it is used primarily as a powerful next-generation antioxidant — significantly more effective than vitamin C or E alone. It shows an exceptional synergistic effect: combining ferulic acid with vitamins C and E strengthens their photo-protection up to 8-fold, which is why it is an indispensable ingredient in antioxidant daytime formulas. It effectively protects against photoaging, reduces hyperpigmentation, counteracts oxidative stress and prevents the formation of wrinkles. Ideal in SPF products, antioxidant daytime serums and for skin exposed to UV radiation and urban pollution.

Kojic Acid

Kojic acid is a natural active ingredient obtained from Aspergillus oryzae fungi — originally discovered in the Japanese fermentation of sake rice. It works by inhibiting tyrosinase — the key enzyme in melanin synthesis in melanocytes — thereby effectively brightening existing hyperpigmentation and preventing the formation of new spots. It has strong antioxidant action, neutralizing free radicals responsible for photoaging and the fixation of hyperpigmentation. It effectively reduces sun spots, melasma, hormonal and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). Recommended for skin with hyperpigmentation, photoaging and after dermatological treatments — an alternative to aggressive hydroquinone with a better safety profile, a key ingredient of Christina's Illustrious line.

2% kojic acid: 50% reduction in melasma over 12 weeks (Garcia & Fulton, 1996, n=29). Efficacy comparable to 2% hydroquinone with a better safety profile.

Mechanism of action

It chelates copper at the active site of tyrosinase, inhibiting the key enzyme of melanogenesis. It also acts as an antioxidant (scavenging ROS), preventing the fixation of hyperpigmentation.
