Probiotics Probiotics (Lactobacillus)
Probiotics in cosmetics are live or freeze-dried probiotic bacteria (mainly Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains) and their metabolites (postbiotics) that support the skin microbiome. The microbiome — the unique ecosystem of microorganisms living on the skin's surface — plays a key role in maintaining skin health and immunity. Probiotics restore the balance of the microbiome disrupted by stress, harsh cosmetics and pollution, with the resulting benefits being a stronger protective barrier and better resilience. They effectively reduce inflammation, redness and irritation, and ease the symptoms of acne, atopic dermatitis and rosacea. This is one of the most modern trends in cosmetics — an ideal ingredient for reactive, sensitive skin and skin with a disrupted hydrolipid barrier.
MicrobiomeL. plantarum lysate 5%: 37% reduction in redness in rosacea over 4 weeks (Yu et al., 2020, n=40). Lactobacillus rhamnosus: 50% reduction in atopic dermatitis.
Postbiotics (organic acids, AMP, EPS) strengthen the skin microbiome. They inhibit pathogens (S. aureus). They stimulate keratinocyte differentiation and the synthesis of natural antibacterial peptides (β-defensins).
