Zinc

Zinc Zinc PCA

Concentration 0.1-2%

Zinc PCA (the zinc ester of pyrrolidone carboxylic acid) is a versatile cosmetic ingredient combining the mineral zinc with the skin's natural moisturising factor (NMF). It works on multiple fronts for oily and problematic skin — it regulates sebaceous gland activity by inhibiting 5-alpha-reductase, the enzyme responsible for sebum overproduction. It has strong antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, helping heal acne lesions and prevent new ones from forming. It also supports epidermal regeneration and strengthens the skin's hydrolipid barrier. An ideal ingredient for caring for oily, combination and acne-prone skin, as well as skin with enlarged pores and a tendency to shine.

Clinical studies

1% Zinc PCA: 41% reduction in sebum over 4 weeks (sebumeter, n=20). Antibacterial activity against C. acnes confirmed in vitro (MIC 0.5 mg/ml).

Mechanism of action

Zinc inhibits type II 5-alpha-reductase, reducing the conversion of testosterone to DHT — the main stimulator of the sebaceous glands. PCA acts as a natural humectant.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)

Concentration 2-10% (optimally 5%)

Niacinamide (vitamin B3) is a versatile active ingredient, one of the best-studied in dermatology — with documented efficacy across many categories of skin concerns. It works in multiple directions: it strengthens the hydrolipid barrier by stimulating ceramide production, inhibits the transfer of melanin to keratinocytes (brightens hyperpigmentation), regulates sebum secretion, and reduces the appearance of pores. It has strong anti-inflammatory action, reducing redness, soothing rosacea, and calming skin reactivity. It suits all skin types and combines well with all other active ingredients (including AHA/BHA acids and retinol). The best results are observed at concentrations of 4-10% and with regular use for at least 8 weeks.

Magnolia extract is obtained from the bark of the magnolia tree (Magnolia officinalis) — a plant used in traditional Chinese medicine for over 2,000 years. It contains unique lignans: magnolol and honokiol, which have strong anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antioxidant action. They inhibit the activity of key inflammatory mediators (NF-kB, COX-2), thereby effectively reducing redness, itching and symptoms of skin hypersensitivity. It has been clinically proven that the use of magnolia extract eases the symptoms of rosacea, atopic dermatitis and allergic reactions. An ingredient particularly recommended in soothing preparations for sensitive, reactive skin and in care after dermatological treatments.

Allantoin

Allantoin Allantoin

Concentration 0.1-2% (up to 0.5% — soothing, up to 2% — keratoplasty)

Allantoin is one of the most versatile cosmetic ingredients, occurring naturally in plants (e.g. comfrey) and animals. In cosmetics it works on several fronts — it soothes irritation, calms redness and accelerates the skin's natural regeneration. It has keratolytic properties (gently exfoliating) as well as keratoplastic ones (promoting epidermal rebuilding), which smooths the skin's texture. It also acts as an emollient, softening the skin and improving its elasticity, and as a humectant that retains moisture. Ideal for all skin types, especially sensitive, damaged skin, skin after dermatological treatments or after excessive sun exposure.

0.5% allantoin: 60% reduction in irritation over 7 days (dermatology clinic, n=30). FDA monograph category for skin protectants.

Mechanism of action

It stimulates keratinocyte mitosis in the basal layer (keratoplasty). It acts mildly keratolytically by loosening desmosomal junctions in the superficial stratum corneum.
