Niacinamide

Niacinamide Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)

Concentration 2-10% (optimally 5%)

Niacinamide (vitamin B3) is a versatile active ingredient, one of the best-studied in dermatology — with documented efficacy across many categories of skin concerns. It works in multiple directions: it strengthens the hydrolipid barrier by stimulating ceramide production, inhibits the transfer of melanin to keratinocytes (brightens hyperpigmentation), regulates sebum secretion, and reduces the appearance of pores. It has strong anti-inflammatory action, reducing redness, soothing rosacea, and calming skin reactivity. It suits all skin types and combines well with all other active ingredients (including AHA/BHA acids and retinol). The best results are observed at concentrations of 4-10% and with regular use for at least 8 weeks.

5% niacinamide: a 35-68% reduction in hyperpigmentation, a 24% reduction in TEWL, and an 8% reduction in pores in 8 weeks (Hakozaki et al., 2002, n=120).

Mechanism of action

A precursor of NAD+/NADH/NADP+ in the mitochondrial energy cycle. It inhibits the transfer of melanosomes from melanocytes to keratinocytes.

Concentration 0.5-2% (Lumiskin)

Diacetyl Boldine is a synthetic active ingredient derived from boldo tree (Peumus boldus) extracts, with strong brightening and antioxidant action. It works by selectively inhibiting tyrosinase — the enzyme responsible for melanin synthesis in melanocytes — without the cytotoxic effect seen with hydroquinone. It effectively reduces sun spots, melasma, age spots and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). It also acts as an antioxidant, protecting the skin from free radicals and preventing the formation of new discolouration. An ideal ingredient for skin with hyperpigmentation and photoaging, and for those seeking a safe alternative to aggressive brightening methods — used, among others, in Christina's Illustrious line.

Clinical studies

1% Lumiskin: 32% reduction in discolouration over 8 weeks (chromameter, n=21, Sederma study). Efficacy comparable to 4% hydroquinone without adverse effects.

Mechanism of action

It selectively inhibits tyrosinase activity in melanocytes (IC50 ~0.3 mM) without a cytotoxic effect. It does not inhibit melanocyte proliferation (unlike hydroquinone).

Vitamin C

Vitamin C Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C)

Concentration 5-20% (L-ascorbic acid), 1-5% (stable derivatives)

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is a water-soluble antioxidant essential to humans, regarded in cosmetics as the gold standard of brightening and anti-aging protection. It performs multiple functions: it strongly neutralizes free radicals, is an essential cofactor in collagen synthesis, inhibits melanin production in melanocytes and strengthens the action of UV filters. It has been clinically proven that, used regularly, it reduces wrinkles, evens out skin tone, brightens hyperpigmentation and restores a youthful glow to the complexion. The most effective forms are L-ascorbic acid (the strongest but unstable) and stable derivatives: Ascorbyl Glucoside, tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate (THD) and magnesium ascorbyl phosphate. Ideal in the care of all skin types, especially dull, tired skin with photoaging and hyperpigmentation — best applied in the morning before an SPF cream.

Mechanism of action

A cofactor of the enzymes that hydroxylate proline and lysine in collagen synthesis (without vitamin C, collagen synthesis stops). It inhibits tyrosinase. Synergy with vitamin E and ferulic acid.

Allantoin

Allantoin Allantoin

Concentration 0.1-2% (up to 0.5% — soothing, up to 2% — keratoplasty)

Allantoin is one of the most versatile cosmetic ingredients, occurring naturally in plants (e.g. comfrey) and animals. In cosmetics it works on several fronts — it soothes irritation, calms redness and accelerates the skin's natural regeneration. It has keratolytic properties (gently exfoliating) as well as keratoplastic ones (promoting epidermal rebuilding), which smooths the skin's texture. It also acts as an emollient, softening the skin and improving its elasticity, and as a humectant that retains moisture. Ideal for all skin types, especially sensitive, damaged skin, skin after dermatological treatments or after excessive sun exposure.

0.5% allantoin: 60% reduction in irritation over 7 days (dermatology clinic, n=30). FDA monograph category for skin protectants.

Mechanism of action

It stimulates keratinocyte mitosis in the basal layer (keratoplasty). It acts mildly keratolytically by loosening desmosomal junctions in the superficial stratum corneum.
